Director's Notes: Deborah Robinson’s Comic Strips are a series of shorts modeled after the look, feel and structure of classic comic strips. They are each around one minute in length, with minimal shots and a quick set-up followed almost immediately by a punchline of sorts. They are the brainchild of comedienne Deborah Robinson, who unwittingly exploits her genuine sweetness to be cruel, sacrilegious, scatological, twisted, and, yet, somehow, still completely endearing. Naturally, I jumped at the opportunity to work with not only Deborah, but also many more of Toronto’s finest comedians; folks like Alana Johnston, Kayla Lorette, Tim Gilbert, Levi MacDougall, Erin Crouse and Kristen McGregor. Our collective goal was to make something simultaneously old-fashioned and unpredictable; something that had a simple and relatively classical structure, but that would take the audience into more dangerous territory than, say, a “Family Circus.” With that in mind, I hope you enjoy Deborah Robinson’s Comic Strips. – Daniel Warth
